Background
The California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT)
was established in 2001.
CCIT, PATH, and ITS
CCIT was originally organized under the California
Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH)
research group. CCIT became a stand-alone center in 2003. CCIT and PATH are now independent, sister organizations; both are part of the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), UC Berkeley.
Partnering
While our primary sponsors are public agencies, specificially Caltrans, we also partner with the private sector. To prevent any potential conflict of interest, we limit private funding to pre-competitive activities or projects that display clear public-interest goals.
How do we partner with the private sector? CCIT sometimes partners with the private sector to transfer research and technology from publicly-funded labs to the marketplace. We also assess innovative products and services. Read more under services.
Collaborating
CCIT collaborates with university researchers to take research to deployment. Too many ideas are stuck in the earlier stages of the Caltrans Five
Stages of Research Deployment and never make it into the field. CCIT works with the research community to move research beyond the lab.
CCIT can facilitate licensing agreements and manage the logistics of pilot deployments, communicating pilot results to industry and practitioners. By maintaining clear communication, CCIT helps to ensure timely research implementation.
