Record the location, type, severity and cause of each accident, as well as the traffic and weather conditions in which it occurred. Use this information to develop the most cost-effective accident prevention program.

  • For sites with accidents caused by excessive speed, consider speed sensors and signs warning motorists if they are driving too fast.

  • Where the safe driving speed has been reduced by bad weather, construction, or an accident, consider setting a lower speed limit and communicating it via variable message signs or highway advisory radio.

  • For locations at which slow or stopped traffic causes rear-end collisions, consider posting warnings on variable message signs that are triggered by traffic occupancy.

  • For curves at which trucks are likely to lose control, consider a system to weigh the trucks in motion, calculate their speed, determine if they are likely to lose control, and warn them via a variable message sign.

  • If sudden onsets of fog are a cause of accidents, consider installing fog sensors and warning signs upstream of the location.
