Transit serves two primary functions: to reduce congestion and to provide mobility for people without access to cars. A city can work with a transit agency to improve transit operations in order to increase transit utilization.

  • If bus service on a major route is degraded by traffic congestion, consider signal priority for buses in the congested area.

  • If transit patronage could be increased by better bicycle access, consider providing bicycle storage (preferably in a location where theft would be discouraged) or bicycle racks on the buses.

  • Consider improving access to information about transit. This might be information at the bus stops, such as the length of time until the next bus arrives, or destinations served by buses serving this stop, or fares. It might include improved telephone information or better information on the web. Web information could include a trip-planning tool that maps out routes from start to finish and provides estimated travel times.

  • Consider advertising and public relations to promote transit awareness and use.
