For many people who do not have access to cars, bicycle and pedestrian travel is a practical alternative to transit. Information about bicycle routes in print and on the web, as well as signs marking the routes themselves, can make bicycle travel safer and more attractive. Similarly, pedestrian routes that are protected from traffic will encourage more people to walk. Variable message signs placed at strategic locations around schools warning motorists to look out for pedestrians and bicyclists may encourage more children to walk and ride bicycles to school.
