Establish an accident database with the location, time, nature,
and cause of accidents as well as the traffic conditions in which
they occurred.
Rear end collisions
- Consider signal
coordination to reduce sudden stops.
- Consider variable message signs triggered by traffic occupancy
to warn of slow or stopped traffic ahead.
Intersection collisions
- At signalized intersections, consider signal
coordination or video
red-light monitoring to reduce incentives to run red
lights.
- For collisions due to vehicles crossing a busy street, consider
installing an actuated
signal that is green for arterial traffic except when
actuated by cross traffic.
- At un-signalized intersections with recurring accidents, consider
speed sensors and warning signs for vehicles approaching too rapidly.
Rail crossing collisions
Single car accidents
- In locations where excessive speed causes accidents consider:
- variable message signs that show safe speeds under current
conditions
- sensors that detect vehicle speeds
- a sign that both displays each vehicle's speed as it approaches
and issues a warning if the speed is excessive
- video cameras that record license numbers of vehicles that
are exceeding the speed limit
Bicycle and pedestrian accidents
- To avoid bicycle accidents at signalized intersections with
high bicycle traffic, consider bicycle-actuated signals.
- To avoid pedestrian accidents, consider pedestrian-activated
signals, countdown signals for crossings that span wide streets,
and crosswalks with ground-level lights that go on when pedestrians
are crossing.
