Pre-trip information

The objective of pre-trip information is to inform travelers of traffic and transit conditions, so they can better assess travel options before selecting a route, mode, or departure time, or before deciding whether to make a trip.Ê

  • If your region has considerable incident related congestion and commercial radio stations that provide traffic information, consider improving the incident detectionÊ function of the traffic management agency, the incident information content and format available to the media, and/or the communications link with the media.Ê Information might include suggested alternate routes or modes.Ê

  • Consider making incident information available on a website or via telephone.

  • Consider making live video of the most congested locations available on the web and TV during the congested period.

  • Consider developing a web site and/or telephone system that provides information on current traffic conditions and transit service along with expected travel times on available routes and modes for a user-selected origin, destination, and departure time.ÊÊÊ

En-route traveler information

  • In work zones consider portable variable message signs to specify work hours, speed restrictions, and information about delays and future closures.

  • Where there is a detour, consider variable message signs to indicate the detour and to guide vehicles on the detour route.Ê

  • Where there is congestion because of an incident, use portable message signs to divert traffic from the congested area.

Parking information

If parking is hard to find, consider a parking guidance system to let travelers know where parking is available.Ê
