  • Establish an accident database with the location, time, nature, and cause of accidents as well as the traffic conditions in which they occurred.

  • For locations at which slow or stopped traffic causes rear-end collisions, consider posting warnings on variable message signs that are triggered by traffic occupancy.

  • At un-signalized intersections with frequent accidents, consider speed sensors and warning signs for vehicles approaching too rapidly.

  • In locations where excessive speed causes accidents consider:
    • variable message signs giving safe speeds under current conditions
    • sensors that detect vehicle speeds
    • a sign that both displays each vehicle's speed as it approaches and issues a warning message if the speed is excessive

  • For curves at which trucks are likely to lose control, consider a system to weigh the trucks in motion, calculate their speed, determine if they are likely to lose control, and warn them via a variable message sign.

  • At hazardous rail crossings, consider installing a highwayørail warning system to prevent impending collisions.
