Back to Expert-Tool Page > Rural Roads > Reduce Congestion

  • If there is congestion from resort area traffic, consider either fixed or variable message signs to direct traffic so that it moves as quickly as possible without interfering unduly with local traffic.

  • If congestion on the main road imposes undue delays on cross streets or roads, consider traffic-actuated signals to allow traffic to cross.

  • When delay is severe, consider using portable variable message signs to indicate expected travel times to key locations in order to motivate travelers to postpone their departure until traffic abates.
