Archived Data User Services (ADUS)

What is it?

Archived Data User Service (ADUS) refers to traffic and accident data collected by TMCs that is archived for real time traffic management, planning, developing new traffic management strategies, or research.

Key Results

ADUS is not common. Many state DOTs and TMCs are still developing their ADUS systems, while others are not yet considering archiving their data.

Portland, Oregon TransPort

  • The TransPort (Transportation Portland) program conducted an experiment in which 10 mainline inductive loop detector stations (with detectors located in each lane) and associated on-ramp detectors at 10 eastbound on-ramps were installed along an 11-mile corridor along eastbound US 26 between Helvetia Road and Skyline Road in Portland, Oregon.
  • Vehicle counts, occupancy and speeds were collected at-20 second intervals and then archived.
  • The archived data will assist in determining the best performance measures for obtaining simple, quick and accurate ideas about the functionality of the corridor, enhancing decision-making.
  • It was determined that such simple, directly measurable variables would be useful in setting standards and determining widely-applicable performance measures.
Benefits
  • Huge reductions in costs and space needed to store and access data, as compared to traditional data collection.
  • Encourages the use of data for multiple purposes.
  • Promotes integration of ITS with traditional information systems.
  • Allows for better long-term transportation management and planning.
  • The detailed nature of ITS-generated data allows for more accurate analysis and makes possible those applications that were previously too costly to undertake.

Implementation Challenges

  • The reluctance to share data among jurisdictions will continue to hinder full ADUS implementation.
  • The lack of ADUS standardization for both data quality and accessibility slows the integration of different information from multiple sources.
  • Organizations like the TMC generally do not have the staff needed for both incident management and data archiving.
